Please come into this google doc and ADD what you found for your issues.
Our goal today, for the first half, is to make a big issue analysis guide to help guide the argument development

DEBATE K-W-L-
For the first step, you
will create a K-W-L chart for both sides of your argument.
--You must create a
bullet for FOUR pro (for the proposition) and FOUR con (against)
--For the WANT to know
section, there should be more than one question asked that are related to each
other.
--For the LEARNED
section, these should be researched from the WANT to know section
--You can work together
in your debate group, but each person is responsible for one.
--BE thorough, write
small, as this is what you will use for your debate argument.

ISSUE analysis: In order to identify what people will be arguing
regarding the propositions, it is important to identify what will be the main
issues (themes) addressed. Your team needs to do an ISSUE ANALYSIS for
each of the propositions. They are all included here.
The following one is an example:
|
Proposition: Implementing school uniforms is better for the
learning environment
|
|
Issues:
|
How so/What each side
would say about it
|
Facts (PROOF)
|
|
**Bullying
|
Pro-
uniforms help cut down on bullying because kids won’t be judged on their
clothes
Con-
bullying will still happen with focusing on other aspects. Might even be
harder to tell who is being bullied, because everyone blends in
|
When I google
“bullying” and “school uniforms”, I came up with ________
(I would need to find
facts to support the pro and to support the con)
|
|
**Money
|
Pro-
uniforms make it so that parents don’t have to spend as much on clothes
Con-
some parents can’t afford expensive uniforms, so poorer kids will end up with
raggy uniforms, which will stand out even more
|
For this I searched
“money issues” + “implementing school uniforms”. The facts I got from this
website say that ______
(I would need to find
facts to support the pro and to support the con)
|
|
**Individuality/
Freedom of expression
|
Pro-
kids can find other ways that are less materialistic and superficial to
express themselves. Kids won’t have to do it in their clothing, crying out
for attention or dressing just to get noticed.
Con-
kids, as young adults, should be allowed to dress according to the identity
they are creating for themselves. By taking away a sense of identity, kids
will feel uncomfortable, therefore, unable to learn to the best of their
ability.
|
(I would need to find
facts to support the pro and to support the con)
|
|
**Safety
|
Pro-
young people will be known as students and identified in communities as
students, cutting back on too much adult/children inappropriate interactions
Con-
Children in uniforms will be recognizable from far away and could become easy
targets, especially teenage girls.
|
(I would need to find
facts to support the pro and to support the con)
|
|
**Culture
|
Pro- Students
can have specific days dedicated to culture, giving it an opportunity to be
well planned and shine in an effort to honor one’s culture. Or, kids that
don’t feel they have a culture, won’t feel left out.
Con-
Students can’t dress according to their culture, taking away their sense of
identity for their culture.

Hello! Welcome to Middle School Debate
We will spend the next 3 weeks preparing our team for the debate tournament held at Begich Middle School on February 23, 2013.
Parents are encouraged to play an active role in the class. We will need as many bodies as possible to help prepare the team.
This will be a great experience for everyone involved.
Good luck and have fun!!
